It may not be the popular opinion, but I loved my high school.

It was a large building which meant I had to walk quite a ways between my classes in the limited amount of time permitted between periods, but that was fine.

The classrooms themselves were very roomy so the desks weren’t crowding each other. All of the teachers I had throughout my years there were pretty nice and gave a reasonable amount of work. I really enjoyed my extra-curricular activities, art and chorus, and attending the school performances for the band and drama club was always fun. The lunches definitely left something to be desired, but they weren’t inedible. All of that aside, there was one thing about my school I absolutely hated, and that was the temperature within the classrooms. One of my teachers explained to me that the school’s entire HVAC system was controlled off-site, so no one in the school could actually adjust the heating or cooling within the classrooms. Often times the air conditioner was left running well into the colder part of autumn, and us students would need to wear jackets in the classroom. For a short period of time in winter the furnace would be running, heating up the classrooms, but once the weather started to warm up outside it was turned off, despite it still being chilly. And then, near the end of the school year as summer approached, the air conditioner was left off despite the rising heat, leaving whatever breeze could be gained through open windows or electric fans as our only relief. The school would have been nearly perfect if only it had had HVAC zone control on-site so that the teachers could all adjust the temperature in their classrooms as needed.

When I was a kid, my family would take small vacations over the school breaks.

Most of the time these vacations were to amusement park destinations, and I loved them! Nothing else can compare to the feeling of excitement you get when going up the steep incline of a roller coaster, or the rush you get when going downhill.

We’d always wake up early to go to the park before it opened, so we would be some of the first people in the park, and stay out until it was almost time for everything to close. We were able to get a lot done in the day by doing this, but it was a lot of time spent on our feet out in the heat. Some days when this took more of a toll on us than usual, we’d go and watch the shows multiple times just so we could have a seat. It was even better when the shows were inside and had air conditioning. We’d also redo the rides that were indoor attractions so that we’d be in the air conditioning while waiting in line. The cool air from the air conditioner was a big relief and helped us to make it through the day at the park. When we visited over the winter break from school, these rides were equally great for the heating they offered when the air conditioner was switched over to a furnace. Despite the weather outside, the indoor attractions remained at a comfortable temperature. At some point in my life I’d like to go and visit one of the amusement parks that are completely indoors. They’re an amazing idea for the convenience and comfort of the guests.

Every summer my son complaints about the heat in his room, even though it’s cooled to the same temperature as the rest of the house with the air conditioning from his vents, so last summer we decided to get an AC unit to put in his window.

You see, we don’t have HVAC zone control so simply let him adjust the temperature control within his own room, and this was a better alternative than paying to upgrade our entire HVAC equipment.

And so I installed the AC unit in his window and instructed him about how it worked. There were a couple rules he had to follow to use it, and he agreed to all of them. Rule number one was that the air conditioner was not to be left on when he wasn’t in the room, needlessly running up our electricity bill. Rule number two was that it was never allowed to be set below 68 degrees for a similar reason. Lastly, rule number three was that he was responsible for rinsing the filter out every other week to ensure dirt and grime weren’t clogging it up and ruining the unit. I assumed I would have to get onto him a couple times about following the rules but he surprisingly surpassed my expectations. He remember to turn the air conditioner off when he left his room, he never set the AC’s temperature below 68, and he rinsed the filter out like he was supposed to without being told. I still don’t see why it should have been necessary, his room was cooled down along with the rest of the house with the normal HVAC system, but I’m proud he’s shown such responsibility with it.

There was a period a couple weeks ago when I was extremely sick.

I would run a temperature of 103 degrees one day only for it to drop down to 96 by nightfall.

This fever and below normal body temperature kept me in a constant state of chills or overheating for nearly a week. I was absolutely miserable. At least the fan and heating pad helped some during the times I needed them, and my blankets were in a constant state of being pushed off and then pulled back on. It wasn’t until after an emergency room visit where I was given steroids and an antibiotic that the symptoms finally cleared up and I was able to go about life normally again.

My pal and I are from the midwest plus my pal and I took our honeymoon on a tropical beach plus it was torture to me. I eventually disclosed to my modern fiance that I am not glad with the heat plus humidity of the tropics plus my pal and I choose more tepid temperatures to getaway now.
