I know plenty of folks who are bubbly, talkative, and consumed with interacting with their clients. However, that isn’t my deal. I’m the sort of person who knows how to do my job – and that’s all I intend to provide you. If you’re looking for a best friend I can’t help you. If you’re looking for a certified heating, cooling, and air quality control specialist with many years of experience, you are in luck. This is why I am often reprimanded at the shop after clients complain about my professional demeanor. Apparently, fixing their air conditioning units and forced air furnaces isn’t good enough. Even though they call me out for emergency repairs, HVAC diagnostics, and air quality control equipment installations… I’m also expected to do it with a shiny smile on my face. Recently, I got into trouble for having a few words with one of my residential HVAC clients. They are continually calling me out to their house for unnecessary heating and cooling upgrades. These people think that they should have indoor air with the same purity as high tech medical facility use. They want me to perform miracles on their central heating and cooling devices. Meanwhile, they won’t do a single thing to improve their own HVAC system or indoor air quality. The last time I was there, I found that the air filters in their HVAC system were at least 2 years old. When I told them to fix their own air filters before they bothered to call me, they wasted no time contacting my boss at the heating and cooling repair shop.

When I was graduating from high school there weren’t so many options available to me. Back in the day, not everybody went to a four-year university. In fact, it was very common to get a job directly out of high school and stick with that career for the next 50 years. It was unlikely for people to enter further educational systems or to pay for expensive college degrees. When I went to the local trade school to become a certified heating and cooling technician everybody thought that I was shooting for the stars. Obtaining an actual professional certification was not necessary when I was a youngster. I was happy to continue my education in air quality control equipment back in the day because it allowed me to get a job as a licensed HVAC technician with the local heating, cooling, and air quality control dealership. From that point on, I thought that it would be smooth sailing with my HVAC education under my belt. Unfortunately, I didn’t foresee all of the technological changes that would happen in the past 20 years. These days, I don’t have the same level of education as other heating and cooling technicians. Our indoor air handling devices are more akin to computers than the rudimentary temperature control systems that I used to work on. Now, there are smart thermostats, wi-fi-enabled air conditioning devices, and fully integrated air purification systems on top of the traditional AC and furnaces that I knew well. I feel like I need to go back to school in computer science so I can manage these indoor air handling devices.

When the day finally comes and you can say that you successfully did it, I think most of us are overjoyed. I know that I was absolutely beside myself on the day that I passed my final heating, cooling, and ventilation exam. You see, I decided to become a certified heating, cooling, and ventilation technician . It’s not that I’m obsessed with indoor air quality control so much as I want to make a steady paycheck. I know that working in the HVAC industry means there will always be air conditioning units and furnaces to repair. I decided that it would be wise to attend trade school and complete my heating and cooling certification within a year and a half. When I got out, several heating and cooling repair shops were ready to hire me as an HVAC technician. The thing is, I never could have foreseen what a disaster my first day would be as a HVAC technician. I went out on my first job yesterday and it was an air conditioning repair that I couldn’t handle. The AC unit was completely broken and the owners of the central HVAC system wouldn’t stop harassing me. I eventually had to call my boss at the heating and cooling repair shop and ask for backup. When the second air quality control specialist arrived, they were less than impressed with my maiden voyage as an HVAC technician. Now I have to work twice as hard tomorrow.

I know that this has been the case with my most recent attempt at improving my household responsibilities. Here, I thought that I was doing everyone a favor by finally having our HVAC system professionally treated. Instead, I think that I did everyone a massive disservice. I was really excited when I noticed that there was an online deal through Groupon for professional heating and cooling services. One of the local HVAC repair shops in town was offering a massive discount on all sorts of central heating, cooling, and ventilation services. I knew that our old air conditioning unit and forced air furnace needed some professional attention. However, I was most concerned about our duct work. I knew that the air ducts hadn’t been professionally clean and at least 10 years. When I saw the price on the professional HVAC repair & diagnostic services, I jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. It seems like many customers signed up for this heating and cooling repair Groupon. The HVAC technician at our house was extremely overworked and stressed. At the same time, I knew that he wasn’t making a fair wage on the heating and cooling maintenance job. I should have realized right then, he wasn’t going to do a great job on our air duct cleaning. After he left, there was dust and dander flying through every air vent. At least after I complained to the HVAC company I got my money back for our half-cleaned HVAC duct cleaning. I used it to buy another Groupon.

It can be really frustrating when you’re trying to start a life and people just don’t want to listen to you. This has been the case in my life as my fiance and I have prepared for our marriage. We wanted to have a really lovely wedding day, but we didn’t want to make it into a massive event that cost anybody a lot of money. We don’t have a ton of cash and the people that we associate with aren’t particularly wealthy, themselves. We decided to keep our ceremony small and to ask our wedding guests for practical gifts so we could get a jump start on our adult living. A lot of people didn’t listen, but some people got it exactly right. Our favorite gift actually is a central heating and cooling system that our extended family chipped in on together. They got us a new furnace and air conditioning system to install in our fixer-upper house. We’re extremely excited to have modern and eco-friendly air quality controls for our first home together. They took their kind gift a step further though. They also arranged so we would have a two-year service and maintenance contract with the heating and cooling repair shop located closest to our home. We don’t have to worry about a single air filter change, air duct cleaning, or God forbid, emergency repair service in the middle of the night. Everything is covered in the cost of the two year HVAC service contract. Now, we can focus on more important things than our energy bills and anticipated air temperature fluctuations. It’s time to start making babies to appreciate this amazing HVAC system.

There are some days that I wake up and make a conscious effort to just be grateful for everything that I have. These are the days that I am usually happiest, calmest, and most optimistic. The days that I forget to pay attention to the good things that are happening in my life are the dark days when I get the most depressed. Recently, I was trying to find something to be optimistic and grateful for, when I looked across the street and saw that my neighbors had called out the local HVAC repair shop again. That immediately gave me something to be happy about. At least I wasn’t having to call my heating and cooling specialist over and over again, like the poor neighbors were. It seems like they needed to call the HVAC repair shop nearly every week for some kind of disaster. I don’t know what is going on with their central heating or cooling system, but clearly it needs a lot of extra attention. I see that HVAC work van sitting in their driveway all the time. I’ve been meaning to go over and ask them about what was wrong with their central air quality control system. If they needed to install a brand new heater or air conditioning unit, I would be happy to help them with the finances for the professional installation. When I consulted my neighbor about the HVAC repairs, she looked at me like I had two heads. Apparently, she had no idea that the HVAC expert was coming to her home so often. I later found out the reason why… The central cooling system was working just fine, but her husband had extramarital reasons to see the HVAC technician every so often.

These days I think a lot of people are getting fed up with providing 24/7 childcare. It’s been many months of having the kids at home and parents are getting pretty exhausted. I can tell you, I am certainly one of those parents. When this social distancing thing started, I thought it was going to be good for our family. We don’t normally get to spend much time together and I was excited about the idea of staying at home with my kids all day long. Well, that enthusiasm wears off after a few months. Truly, they have been driving me up the wall with their endless complaining and inability to entertain themselves. I got so desperate the other day to get some out of my home office that I told them to go play in the attic. I didn’t think the sweltering, hot attic space would be very fun for them… But somehow they stayed up there for the remainder of the day. Later, I found out why. As I was working I noticed that the indoor air temperature started feeling strange. It definitely didn’t feel like our usual thermostat programming keeping the indoor air at our ideal temperature level. I started growing worried that there was something wrong with the thermostat for the air conditioning unit so I started troubleshooting on my own. The thermostat was fine, the air conditioning unit was kicking into gear in response to my air temperature adjustments, but there was still no cold air getting into the house. I finally went into the attic and found out the reason. The kids had taken it upon themselves to build a massive fort in the attics using the exposed air ductwork. In doing so, they pulled out one of the panels of the air ductwork and completely crippled our central cooling system.

Every few weeks I like to reach out and give my friend Nikki a phone call.

I check in and just make sure that she’s doing okay because she lives a fairly isolated life.

It’s unlikely that she has had any human contact since the last time that we spoke, so I just like to be an ear for her to rely on. The problem is, since she has no other ears to abuse, she tends to dominate the conversation and talk endlessly about mundane things. Whatever is going on in her life, no matter how trivial it is, I’m going to hear about it for hours. Recently, this was even the case when it came to her faulty thermostat programming. I should have known better than to call her that day because it had been extremely hot and humid out for the past several weeks. Nikki tends to complain about her indoor air quality on a regular basis, and that’s especially true when air conditioning is being used. I didn’t want to talk about her failing AC window units for hours, but that’s always what takes place anyways. On this particular phone call, she was telling me that she had finally switched over to a central cooling system, instead. I thought that meant I was off the hook and wouldn’t have to hear about AC for the next 3 hours… But I was wrong. Instead of telling me about her low-quality AC window units, Nikki spent the entire phone call telling me about her buggy central thermostat. Apparently, she didn’t do a lot of research about the air quality control device before it was installed. Now, she can’t figure out how it works and she’s getting upset with the fluctuating hot and cold indoor air temperatures. Ah well, maybe we’ll talk about my engagement next time.

I suppose I should start by saying that I am a professional heating, cooling, and ventilation specialist. I became a certified HVAC worker about 5 years ago when I left my old job and jumped into trade school. I was tired of working at a desk every day and I wanted to learn how to use my hands. Soon, I was enrolled in technical classes for heating and cooling equipment repair, diagnostics, and installations. At the time, I was the only girl in my entire class. That fact has not changed when I entered the job market. I quickly got to a local heating and cooling repair shop as an intern and rose through the ranks until I was performing my own HVAC repair services. Ever since then, I have been the most commonly requested heating and cooling professional on the staff. This is despite the fact that several of my co-workers have over 20 years of experience in the HVAC industry. However, I think that my gender has something to do with my popularity. Not only are women more comfortable with me coming to their houses, but men seem okay with it too. People always say that you have to be careful when you’re introducing pets to each other. You don’t want to have a dog that wants to tear your cat’s head off any more than you want to have a pair of cats who absolutely hate each other. It can be difficult to maintain a peaceful household if you wind up with animals who decide that they need to fight to the death. Well, nobody ever warned you about making sure that your technology gets along. That was something that I had to find out the hard way when I recently purchased a smart thermostat which was developed by the people behind Apple. It turns out, this air quality control device doesn’t exactly like Google products… Like our family Alexa system. The smart thermostat and our electronic helper absolutely refuse to talk to each other or get the right message across. Everyday when I wake up and ask Alexa about the outdoor air temperature, somehow my smart thermostat starts changing the air quality control settings that were programmed weeks ago. When I ask Alexa to readjust the smart thermostat, suddenly the forced air furnace has been turning on rather than decreasing the power level of the air conditioner. If I go to the smart thermostat and directly change the programming from the touchscreen air quality control panel, I can hear Alexa in the kitchen telling me that she doesn’t understand. I don’t know why the smart thermostat and the personal assistant bot seemed to have such an intensive sibling rivalry. However, I can tell you that things have stupidly heated up in our house since we tried to go smart.

Even if people seem like they have your best interest in mind, it’s difficult to know for sure until it’s too late.

People can be very manipulative and deceptive even when it seems like you’re just doing them a favor. This is exactly what is happening with my roommate and innumerable guys that she has seduced. Most recently, she had her eyes set on a particular heating and cooling technician and she easily leveraged our broken HVAC system to rope him into a relationship. I should say, she took our perfectly fine central heating and cooling system, broke it, and utilized the dysfunctional air quality control equipment to force this heating and cooling technician into her life. When we moved into this apartment together it had amazing indoor air quality control. At some point, we decided that the energy bill was a bit high so she called a local heating and cooling company for a routine diagnostic appointment. At that point, she fell in love with the HVAC worker who was responsible for our air filter change, ductwork cleaning, and system troubleshooting. The next thing I knew, she told me that the entire central HVAC system has broken down. I was confused how it had fallen into disrepair after the heating and cooling specialist was at our house two days earlier. Like clockwork, our HVAC system started breaking down every week or two. Every time, she texted the same HVAC technician and asked him to come help. He always got to feel like the knight in shining armor, she presented herself as a desperate princess. They’ve been engaged since our third emergency HVAC repair.

They aren’t self-sufficient and they haven’t learned how to entertain themselves yet. That means, you spend an awful lot of time running around trying to keep them comfortable, happy, and safe all at once. Unfortunately, that was really cutting into my ability to work from home and my wife’s ability to stay sane. We decided that we needed to give the kids their own separate space so that they could leave us alone. We figured that converting the garage into an outdoor hanging space was a great idea, but we needed some kind of heating and cooling system to keep them comfortable. Without advanced air temperature control, there was no chance that they could hang in the garage without overheating in the Summers and freezing to death in the winters. We didn’t think it was possible to extend our ductwork from the central HVAC system all the way into the garage, so we started looking at smaller heating and cooling machinery. It didn’t take long before we found that mini split ductless heating and cooling systems were often used in this same application. You could install the long, thin heating and cooling machinery to any walls and it would effectively provide advanced air temperature control for that space. We had the heating and cooling unit installed in the garage last week, and our lives have been so much better already. Every time the kids start to drive us insane, we just shove them in the garage with their videogames and turn on the air conditioner. Parenting.
